Supporting Your Patients’ Audiology and Hearing Health Care Needs
At Pioneer Hearing in Pocatello, we work closely with local physicians to ensure patients receive the hearing care they need as part of their overall health. Whether it’s a diagnostic hearing test, a hearing aid fitting, or long-term care, we provide individualized support with consistent communication throughout the process. Each patient’s situation is different—and so is their hearing journey. We take the time to understand how hearing challenges may be affecting their relationships, work, safety, and confidence. What to Know About Diabetes and Hearing Loss
Diabetes and hearing loss are two of America’s most widespread health concerns. Yet, the link between them is often missed during routine care—even though it’s well documented.
More than 38 million Americans live with diabetes, and studies show they’re about twice as likely to experience hearing loss. Among those with prediabetes, hearing difficulties are also more common—occurring roughly 30% more often than in individuals with normal blood sugar levels.
What’s the Connection?
While the research is ongoing, high blood sugar may damage the blood vessels and nerves in the inner ear—much like how diabetes can affect the eyes and kidneys.
Why It’s Easy to Miss
Hearing loss often develops gradually, making it hard to recognize. It’s usually a spouse, friend, or family member—not the patient—who first notices something has changed.
Signs That May Suggest a Hearing Concern:
- Often asks people to repeat themselves
- Finds it hard to follow conversations in groups
- Says others sound like they’re mumbling
- Struggles to hear clearly in restaurants or loud environments
- Increases the volume on the TV or phone beyond normal levels
What You Can Do
If a patient with diabetes or prediabetes shows these signs, a hearing evaluation can help catch changes early—supporting better communication, reducing cognitive strain, and improving quality of life.
